Organized by the OSCE Presence, a round table dedicated to the electoral rights and political participation of national minorities in Albania was held in Tirana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The event was attended by representatives of national minorities, as well as representatives of the State Election Commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The President of the Macedonian Alliance for European Integration (MAEI), Vasil Sterjovski, emphasized in his address that the current Electoral Code does not provide equal opportunities for the political representation of national minorities and, according to him, poses a serious obstacle to their entry into the Albanian Parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n“It is necessary to introduce guaranteed parliamentary seats or electoral quotas for national minorities, following the example of several European countries, in order to ensure their genuine and effective political representation,” Sterjovski said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
He also called for the establishment of a state budget to fund the election campaigns of national minority parties, pointing out that they are at a disadvantage compared to the major political parties and do not receive financial resources from the state to conduct an equal electoral campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Additionally, Sterjovski proposed that the State Election Commission provide financial resources for national minority media outlets, through which information campaigns about the electoral process would be implemented in minority languages. According to him, this would contribute to better awareness and higher voter turnout among members of national minorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n“It is essential for representatives of national minorities to be included as members in election commissions at all levels, in order to guarantee transparency and trust in the electoral process, as well as to ensure they have equal access to the media during election campaigns,” he emphasized.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
The participants of the round table exchanged views and experiences on advancing the electoral rights of national minorities, highlighting the importance of creating a more inclusive electoral system that allows for the equal political participation of all citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
